Hawthorn or Crataegus Monogyna is one of the most popular native hedgerow varieties. A deciduous variety that has a quick growth rate and is a key component in rural mixed native hedges. Hawthorn is fast growing at 30-60cm per annum and offers lots of seasonal interest including flowering, berries, autumn colour as well as being a good privacy hedge due to its thorns. Hawthorn will do well in nearly all soils and likes sun or partial shade. Extremely wildlife friendly it acts as a shelter for lots of wildlife with the thorny stems providing security for birds aswell as the berries providing much need food source. Hawthorn is most commonly used as a bare root or whip plant but can also be supplied pot grown to plant in the summer months.
