Thuja ‘Smaragd’, a more ornamental alternative to the standard Thuja, is a fast-growing evergreen tree which grows into a narrow conical tree. It has aromatic, scale-like leaves and produces small cones. A great ornamental conifer for small gardens, it creates a pleasing narrow pyramidal tree which when mature can reach 4-5 metres in height with only 2.5 metre width. Thuja responds well to pruning and can be shaped, or kept small and compact. Thuja ‘Smaragd’ can also be used for hedging to create a dense, compact hedge which can be used for screening, wind break and noise reduction purposes. Used as a popular alternative to leylandii, Thuja has a slower growth rate (30-40cm per year) and doesn’t result in die-back which can occur on the old wood of leylandii. It grows well in most well-drained soils and will tolerate full-sun or partial shade. For any advice or guidance through your order, please email or call us.
