Photinia ‘Red Robin’ is an easy to grow, ornamental evergreen shrub. The glossy, oval shaped leaves grow to 10cm in length and are deep green when mature but bright red when young. Pruning encourages the new red shoots of vibrant red leaves and so if using as a hedge, prune 2-3 times a year to ensure the hedge remains dense and ensures a continuation of the new red leaves. Photinia’s can also be topiaried into ornamental shapes to be used as specimen plants in the garden and again if regularly pruned, the new red foliage can give a pleasing look to a well shaped specimen. If left unpruned, clusters of creamy-white flowers appear in spring on last years growth which then turn into small red berries. Photinia’s grow well in most soils but prefers moist, hummus rich, well-drained soil and will grow in full sun or partial shade. It is fully hardy in most places, down to -12C. Its mature height can grow to 4 metres but it can easily be kept to 1-1.5 metres through regular pruning.
